Why is urination more difficult?

BPH stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. This means a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland found only in men. It sits below the bladder and surrounds the urethra — the tube that carries urine out of the body. As men get older, the prostate often grows in size. This can squeeze the urethra and make it harder to pass urine.

What does it mean to care for a patient with an enlarged prostate?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an alarmingly common progressive condition, with almost 80% of men affected in some way at the age of 70, and 90% at the age of 80yrs. Many of these men, have enjoyed a good quality of life up to this point and find the condition especially debilitating. In a short space of weeks to months, symptoms of a worsening stream, waking up several times at night due to poor emptying develop which could affect every aspect of active life.
